Aranzadi meander park in Pamplona resists the recent floods following its refurbishment

03.07.2013

Aranzadi meander is a large green area located in the northwest of PamplonaAranzadi meander is a large green area located in the northwest of Pamplona, between the old town of Pamplona and Rochapea and Chantrea neighborhoods. It is characterized by the curvy shape of Arga river while passing through the city, offering a landscape of riparian vegetation, integrating gardens and trails used by villagers.

The Planning office at the City Council of Pamplona promoted the redevelopment of this area, frequently flooded by the constant swelling of the river Arga, with a plan to integrate the natural watercourse with leisure and educational activities specially selected for this area. Planners sought a balance between the needs of the citizens for a high-quality area and the horticultural exploitation of local varieties recovered with organic farming and its environmental role.

The project swiveled around two ideas to be reconciled. On one hand, the preservation of existing orchards, with a strong social and cultural value, and on the other the creation inside the park of a floodable zone called "flood forest" that would allow to regulate the water regime in case of not exceptional flooding.

This solution designed to coexist with the river, to accommodate its sometimes increased flow, has made possible to reduce the frequency of flooding at the gardens. At the same time, the park enjoys a beautiful river landscape, a natural outlook with trees of medium and small size, plenty of light areas for recreational use.

Roads strategy consisted on providing continuity to the existing ones, closing a circuit with access to all buildings of the meander, also encouraging the role of the area as connection between Rochapea and Chantrea neighborhoods and Old Town. The rest of the roads have permeable pavement as a typical park. Landscape architects chose Stabex ®, as natural soil stabilization solution by FYM-Italcementi Group. Stabex ® has been used on an area of 12,000 square meters of walkways and plazas.

The relevance given to vegetation, the natural flooring and to the landscape required a treatment for paths and squares highly integrated in the environment and resistant to the frequent traffic of users and maintenance vehicles.
